Dodgers Claim Catcher Anthony Bemboom Off Waivers From Anaheim

The Dodgers are wheeling and dealing even on an of-day as the team flies out to Philadelphia. Los Angeles needed to add some catching depth after losing Keibert Ruiz via trade, and they did that by signing Tony Wolters over the weekend.

But the Dodgers apparently weren’t done there. They reportedly claimed catcher Anthony Bemboom off of waivers from the Angels earlier today. Bemboom has bounced around a few organizations over the years, but he was designated for assignment by the Angels over the weekend.

Adding Bemboom allows for some depth at the minor league level for the Dodgers. Should anything happen to Will Smith or Austin Barnes, they now have 3 guys down there with bug league experience that they could call on.

The Dodgers are going to be without Justin Turner for a few days. Dave Roberts explained on Sunday that he had sustained a groin injury ranging to his left for a grounder in the games against the Angels. Even with the day off on Monday, the expectation is that he will be down a few days before they reevaluate.

Roberts also explained this week when Jimmy Nelson sustained the injury that ended his season. Nelson was warming up to go into a game when he felt something in his arm. The Dodgers shut him down immediately and he will need surgery to correct a flexor issue.

  1. Paul this has been the most bizarr year ever for Friedman. We’ve been used to all his Dumpster dives, but this year has been more like leeching the sewer system. It’s obvious we’ve had injury issues, but most of these make zero sense without anymore trades or expanding the roster etc. I must admit I like his tenacity, but it’s like he’s throwing a hundred darts hoping one will stick…

    1. If I’m correct, rosters can expand to 28 on September 1st. But next year, if the NL has a DH, and I’m sure the MLBPA will want that as part of the new CBA, it will mean Roberts won’t have to struggle with in game and pitching decisions nearly as much as he’s had to this year.

    2. Kirk and Paul, Ain’t nothing to get worked up about. This is just to cover the no. 3 catcher’s spot after the lost of Ruiz and to support OKC. At least they got guys w/ MLB experience instead of relying on an untested 19 yr.old w/. no experience. This is only an emergency to cover Barnes and Smith. This is not a permanent thing as, if another one comes available, one of them will be let go……like a revolving door. Same situation as w/ the relief pitchers.

      1. Definitely makes sense Shaku, but I’m wondering if he’s just going ALL out fearing there will be a strike shortened season next year. We need catching depth, but ti has been so un like Friedman to trade our #1 prospects in the past. Loving the fact he went all out after Sherz and Trea, but something just doesn’t seem right to me…

  2. Kirk, what seems not right are the daily injury occurrences on this team And as I mentioned before is it seems not right the way Roberts manages in game and pitching

along with lineups and all. And if there’s a strike shortened season next year you can bet that Manfred will be a big reason for it.
