Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw Ties Sandy Koufax in the Win Column

On Wednesday night, star southpaw Clayton Kershaw tossed 7 shutout frames against the Miami Marlins. He struck out 10 batters, his slider was working as much as it ever has, and his tempo was something we saw from early-2010’s Kershaw. He looked poised and his left arm proved that he has overcome injuries and doubters to reinvent himself to a point that has made him an ace once again.

In the process of the great start, the 31-year-old Clayton Kershaw tied another generational southpaw in Sandy Koufax in the win category.

Clayton Kershaw figures to pass up Sandy Koufax at some point this season, but they both remain tied at 165 wins for the time being.

Across 12 seasons in the big leagues, Kershaw has been downright dominant and has put himself in the conversation with the likes of Sandy Koufax as the best pitchers in the history of the sport. He holds a lifetime 2.42 earned run average which is good for the BEST earned run average in the history of baseball (dating back to 1871) for pitchers who have thrown over 2,000 career innings. Sandy Koufax ranks sixth on that leaderboard with a 2.76 lifetime ERA.

Koufax tossed 12 seasons of his own. The only thing that seems to separate Koufax from Kershaw at this point are the four World Series championships that Koufax brought to the franchise in 1955, 1959, 1963, and 1965. For reference, Koufax held a 0.95 ERA and 1.41 FIP in his 57 World Series innings.

The two remain in the same conversation and Kershaw has yet to write the ending to his career. At just 31 years of age, this will not be the last time you will hear Clayton Kershaw’s name in the same breath as Sandy Koufax.
