Dodgers Coach Bob Geren Under Consideration for Giants Managerial Opening

Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren is currently being considered as a managerial candidate in 2020 for the San Francisco Giants. Long-tenured manager Bruce Bochy is set to retire after this season and the Giants are scouring for a replacement, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Team Ties

As Heyman mentions in the tweet, current Giants general manager Farhan Zaidi has had a direct relationship with Geren in the past from his time in Los Angeles as well as Oakland. Geren should be a hot commodity in the managerial market considering his most recent run as the bench coach for one of the best teams in baseball under Dave Roberts.

Geren was an MLB manager as recently as 2011, when he was the manager of the Oakland A’s. He was hired to be the Dodgers’ bench coach following the 2015 season, the season Dave Roberts was also hired.

Geren’s Future

Upon Geren’s initial hire, he cited a primary reason for wanting to be a member of the Dodgers organization as being the location. His family is based out of Southern California and the Dodgers made sense. Considering his former involvement with the San Diego Padres, Geren could be under consideration there following the recent firing of manager Andy Green.

It would be a shame to see Geren go considering the success the Dodgers have experienced with him as their bench coach, but all teams experience turnover with coaches in pursuit of better opportunities. Regardless of what uniform Geren is repping in 2020, we wish him the best.

My name is Daniel Preciado and I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore Sport Analytics major and Cognitive Science and Economics dual minor at Syracuse University. When I am not in New York, I live in Whittier, California --- not too far from Chavez Ravine. I am pretty old-school for being an analytics guy and I will always embrace debate. Also, Chase Utley did absolutely nothing wrong.

  1. A Dodger GM………now a Dodger manager…….(Grin!)………looks like the Giants decided “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!

  2. F U Geren if you go to them. I hope you fail and the fans eat you alive as they long for the Bochy days

  3. If Geren goes to the Giants, which I really hope does not happen, my prime candidate for replacement would be Bill Haselman.
