Dodgers: Cody Bellinger Talks About Being Starstruck by Kobe Bryant

Cody Bellinger talks about meeting Kobe Bryant.

It’s not every day that you hear about a big-league MVP winner talking about being starstruck. But for the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger, that was the case when he met one of the biggest stars in Los Angeles history.

In a conversation with Tampa Bay’s Blake Snell, the Dodgers’ Bellinger revealed that the one person he was starstruck meeting was the late Kobe Bryant. Cody talked about the day he met him and the emotions that he went through just trying to talk to Kobe.

So, 100% it was Kobe Bryant. It was right before [a playoff game against Milwaukee], I was in the video room and Kobe walks in. I look up and I was like, ‘Oh, man. This is Kobe Bryant.’ He was like, ‘Man, I love that you’re watching video right before a game.’ I remember trying to say words. I wanted to say what’s up to him but I couldn’t figure out what to say. I really was speechless. We ended up taking a picture and it was probably like a three-to-five-minute conversation. By far the coolest person that I’ve ever met. It was crazy, man. I was so starstruck.

If anyone can make a professional athlete stumble over their words, it makes sense that it would be Kobe Bryant. The late Lakers’ legend was an icon in Los Angeles for over twenty years, extending far beyond his playing career. The Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger had not won the MVP yet when he met Kobe, but it’s cool to see how he would win the year after meeting him.

Kobe Bryant may no longer be with us, but that won’t stop us from continuing to talk about him as much as we can. Los Angeles is such a storied sports city with the Dodgers, Lakers, Kings, Sparks, and many more. Kobe will forever stand out, and we’re hoping Cody does for a long, long time.
