Dodgers: Dave Roberts Open to Infielder Matt Davidson Pitching in 2021

The Dodgers scooped up Matt Davidson on a minor league deal just under 2 weeks ago. The hope was that he would be able to provide some right-handed depth. He would also serve as an option at third base should the need arise.

But as it turns out, Davidson can also pitch if necessary. He has made 6 appearances as a pitcher in his career, with 3 coming as recently as last season with the Reds. Through 6.1 career innings, he owns a 2.84 ERA and has racked up 3 strikeouts. The Dodgers are reportedly open to having him come out of the bullpen in a pinch.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talked about Davidson after their Spring game on Sunday. Doc mentioned that he loves the depth that they bring and the fact that he is open to pitching for them as needed.

He’s open to the idea of logging some innings out of the bullpen. He threw a pen the other day. The ball came out good, so he gives us that versatility.

This comes right after Davidson hit a monster homerun in the Dodgers first game against the A’s. If they can get even a fraction of the production that he put up in Chicago, he could be one of their best under-the-radar pickups.

The Dodgers won that Spring Training game by a score 0f 2-1. Their next game is this afternoon against the Rockies and Trevor Bauer will get the start in his first Cactus League action.
