Dodgers: Expect All Hands on Deck Behind Walker Buehler

The Dodgers are gearing up for a huge Division Series matchup with the Padres starting tonight in Texas. Walker Buehler will get the start for Los Angeles despite the fact that his blister still seems to be an issue.

With that in mind, Dave Roberts revealed that his plan is an ‘all hands on deck’ approach heading into Tuesday night. The Dodgers will go with Buehler to start the game, and someone else from the rotation may piggyback off of him.

I think everyone, I think that outside of Clayton [Kershaw] we’ve got everyone essentially available. I touched on it a little bit yesterday, whether it’s Dustin [May], Julio [Urias], Tony [Gonsolin], guys that can potentially start games, use them as a bullpen day. So we’ve got kind of everyone all hands on deck I think.

This approach would mirror that which was used in game 1 of the Wild Card Series. Buehler went 4 innings and Julio Urias came in to relieve him for 3 innings of his own. Roberts felt that they could do something similar on Tuesday and have it act as that pitcher’s bullpen game. That would set things up for that pitcher to start a game later in the series.

For instance, the Dodgers could follow up Buehler with Dustin May and then have him make a start or relief appearance on Saturday in game 5 if necessary. Then again, it could be anyone of those three guys named by Doc. All three have gone back and forth between the rotation and bullpen to prepare for the postseason.

It’s just really hard to say. Because I can’t really speak to yet as far as how many pitches he throws in an inning. You know when he gets north of 20, the stress of a particular inning, and really just how it reacts to the elements here in Texas. So there’s really no hard number. I think just for us just continue to watch it each inning and make a decision.

So there you have it, no hard inning or pitch limit on Buehler heading into tonight. The Dodgers will go with him as long as they can until they feel like his finger is in danger of getting worse.
