Dodgers Finalizing Contract with New Pitching Coach Mark Prior

With longtime pitching coach Rick Honeycutt departing from the dugout and entering the front office, the Dodgers were left with big shoes to fill. According to Jon Heyman, the Dodgers have honed in on bullpen coach Mark Prior to replace Honeycutt and a deal is in its final stages.

Prior was once one of baseball’s brightest young players and many expected him to be a superstar ace. However, injuries derailed his career and at just 39 years old, he will now be taking over as pitching coach of a very talented staff.

One huge asset that Prior has is within his age — pitchers can relate to him, especially the young ones. Just as players have taken a liking to Dave Roberts as the manager, the Dodgers will surely take a liking to Prior as well.

Prior knows this organization after two seasons with them and with big shoes to fill, he seems poised. Both Rick Honeycutt has already expressed their excitement and confidence in what Prior can bring to the Dodgers pitching staff:

“Mark’s extremely smart, always observing, very conscientious, very prepared. He’s a good communicator with the pitchers. He always wanted to be at every bullpen session, always listening. The continuity I hope will be very streamlined going forward.”

The Dodgers have moved in a different direction and while Honeycutt leaving is a huge loss, Prior looks to make it a positive.
