Dodgers: Joe Kelly Activated, Caleb Ferguson Optioned

The Dodgers have shipped left-hander Caleb Ferguson to Triple-A Oklahoma City and have activated right-hander Joe Kelly from the bereavement list.

Kelly had recently been placed on the bereavement list and has posted a 7.79 ERA and 4.61 FIP this season for the Dodgers in his 17 1/3 innings of work. The Dodgers signed him to a three-year deal this offseason for over $20 million.

Ferguson, 22, was a major piece of the bullpen in 2018 and enjoyed a campaign where he struck out over a batter per inning with a 3.49 ERA.

This demotion comes as no surprise as Ferguson has struggled for the entirety of the season, posting a 5.94 ERA and 6.83 FIP in 16 2/3 innings of relief work. It will be interesting to see if Ferg will work in a starting capacity down in Triple-A considering that is where the Dodgers view his long-term future to lie.

My name is Daniel Preciado and I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore Sport Analytics major and Cognitive Science and Economics dual minor at Syracuse University. When I am not in New York, I live in Whittier, California --- not too far from Chavez Ravine. I am pretty old-school for being an analytics guy and I will always embrace debate. Also, Chase Utley did absolutely nothing wrong.

  1. Caleb Ferguson simply could not get MLB hitters out any more for now anyway to save his life. And it’s a big reason why he was sent back down, besides of course Kelly returning.

  2. Last night when Joe Kelly entered the game, the score was 8-3 Dodgers, when the inning was over, it was 8-5. The Dodgers have placed Kelly in “low-leverage situations,” you know not a close game, nobody on base, but man the guy is like “throwing gasoline on a fire.” I realize he just came the bereavement list so perhaps his head is elsewhere.

  3. Frankly, based on what I witnessed with Kelly last evening, the FO had best be looking at Kimbrel or another BP pitcher. The team needs “relief” from his poor performances. Hopefully, Caleb Ferguson will work his way back into the rotation, but Kelly looks lost out there. Go Blue!!!

  4. I don’t know which Joe Kelly is hurting the Dodgers the most: The Joe Kelly who broke Ramirez’ rib or the Joe Kelly pitching for the Dodgers.

  5. Do we really think Kelly is better thsn Fergie? Heck I think I could do whst Kelly is doing, and for alot less money!

  6. It seems like the Dodgers FO doesn’t want to, care or feel there is a need to fix the bullpen issues? Somebody out there say “Robin that is not the case” but man watching the game last night Mets 7-3, watching Roberts walking to the mound, take the ball away from reliever after reliever SMH.
