Dodgers: Enrique Hernandez Comments On Umpire Eric Cooper’s Death

Perhaps you heard the big news around baseball Sunday night. While no game was on the schedule, veteran MLB umpire Eric Cooper passed away suddenly.

While this was obviously huge news in the baseball world – you see the ripple effect the day after. For example, Los Angeles Dodgers’ player Kiké Hernandez extended his condolences in a tweet directed towards Cooper. Check out what Hernandez had to say about the umpire below:

Obviously, immense respect exists on the part of Hernandez for Cooper.

“Coop was a pro and always in a great mood! One of the good ones!! Rest in peace!”

Now, this is notable because if Cooper wasn’t a good umpire; it’s unlikely that current Dodgers players would come out and say anything at all. Equally important, Hernandez pointing out that Cooper was always in a great mood is a nice memory to leave about someone. For example, umpires don’t always show up to the park in the best of moods (without naming names).

Additionally, Cooper had a little Los Angeles Dodgers’ history in his career.

He was behind the plate for three no-hitters: including the one thrown by Hideo Nomo in 2001. Also, he called the perfect game by Mark Buehrle thrown in 2007. His three plate assignments on no-hit games tied for most among active Major League umpires.

In addition to the no-hitters, Cooper was also behind the plate for Cal Ripken Jr.’s final game in 2001.

Finally, it appears baseball lost one of it’s best in the profession on Sunday night. Thankfully, the organization has class individuals showing just that in the wake of such a sad event. Props to Hernandez for taking time out to gesture and remember him in a fond light – for all those who will never cross paths with Cooper.

Dodgers Nation would like to extend their condolences to the Cooper family and friends.
