Dodgers Legend Orel Hershiser Gets Another Chance at Hall of Fame

Orel Hershiser was the undisputed ace of the Dodgers’ 1988 World Series team, picking up an All-Star game selection, a unanimous Cy Young Award and a record 59 scoreless inning streak.



On December 5th in Maryland, during MLB’s winter meetings, a committee will vote and if Hershiser receives the 12 necessary votes to qualify for the Hall, his name will be announced on January 18, 2017 to prepare him for his enshrinement on July 30, 2017.

Along with Hershiser, here are the other players and coaches in contention for the Hall of Fame:

  • Harold Baines
  • Lou Pinella
  • Albert Belle
  • Davey Johnson
  • Will Clark
  • Mark McGwire

Had Orel not gotten hurt in 1990, I think he would have been a lock for this.  Tommy LaSorda burned his arm out, letting him pitch too many innings (He lead the NL in IP 3 consecutive seasons, 1987-1989).  Same thing Tommy did with Fernando Valenzuela and Ramon Martinez.  I just cannot see Orel getting into the hall 🙁
