While you were getting ready for Thanksgiving, the Los Angeles Dodgers were behind the scenes preparing for a baseball season. The Dodgers made several corresponding roster moves on Tuesday. These moves give the Dodgers a complete 40-man roster.
Among the moves:
- They selected the contracts of right-handed pitcher Yadier Alvarez, infielder Matt Beaty, infielder Edwin Ríos, catcher Keibert Ruiz and right-handed pitcher Josh Sborz.
- The following players were designated for assignment: pitcher Erik Goeddel, Zac Rosscup and infielder/outfielder Tim Locastro.
- Tom Koehler was granted his unconditional release.
Furthermore, that completes Koehler’s career as a Los Angeles Dodger. Koehler actually never pitched in a Dodgers uniform due to injury, which is unfortunate.
A baseball season may be off in the distance. Both for the Dodgers, and other teams; it’s coming. Like a light at the end of the tunnel, it is creeping closer with every offseason day.
Small, transactional moves like these are what begin to shape a roster in the early stages. Thing slowly begin to take shape.
Our Brook Smith had a nice post on the Dodgers selecting the contract on Keibert Ruiz. Furthermore, the Ruiz bit is probably the biggest nugget in all of this. While it doesn’t mean anything definitive in terms of when Ruiz will make a MLB debut – it certainly signals that he’s in future plans in the not too distant future. For others like Goeddel, Rosscup, and Locastro; the door in Dodgers gear has not closed. It simply means that they are viewed as expendable pieces for one reason or another at the time being. Moreover, it will always be interesting to think about what role Koehler could have filled had injury not awaited him immediately in Los Angeles.
