Dodgers: Max Muncy Finding Confidence in Roberts Sticking With Him at Cleanup

Max Muncy might not have had the year he would like, but the consistency is key.

One question that we’ve seen a lot of from Dodgers fans the last few weeks is why Max Muncy. Why is Max Muncy still in the lineup? Why does he keep getting to bat cleanup?

In five playoff games, Max Muncy has hit cleanup all five times. Dave Roberts batting him fourth on Monday night makes it six out of six games.  And that decision obviously had Dodgers fans wondering why given the struggles that Muncy has faced for most of the regular season. Those questions have slowly faded as he starts to find his swing in the postseason.

For Max Muncy, he’s finding a lot of his confidence thanks to Dave Roberts’ faith in him. Max talked with Dodgers media on Monday afternoon about his continued role as the cleanup hitter throughout the postseason.

It meant a lot to my confidence just knowing he had my back. And he just kept reaffirming me that I was having good at-bats, just the results weren’t there. My process was there, but that’s the difficult part of this game. You can do a lot of things right and nothing can go right for you…For him to sit there and have my back for the entire season, it definitely meant a lot for me.

In the NLDS, Muncy came through with a few key hits. The overall numbers might not have been there, but he was a big part of the reason the Dodgers were able to take Game 2 from the Padres. Muncy drive in two runs en route to a one-run win that game. Whatever Roberts is doing, it seems to be working with keeping Muncy in that cleanup spot.

  1. Muncy had a good 2 year run but he reverted to his 195 batting average days. Nothing there anymore except he is the newest Roberts pet and can do no wrong.

  2. nik, tonights meltdown was just that, meaning Dodgers fell short with no 9th inning relief to get outs needed for the Dodgers to have a chance in their half of 9th. Muncy was not the real problem, but rather the whole lineup failing to put the ball in play again. Then there was homers given up by our BP.

  3. D.R. MAKING A LOSING CALL ,MUNCY DAM SURE IS A ROERTS PET. PLAYERS SETTING OUT THAT HAVE BETTER GLOVES, BETTER ARMS,BETTER HITTING AND YET ROBERTS PLAYS MUNCY, WHAT THE HELL ? MUNCY IS A REAL PROBLEM. ROBERTS SAYS HE GOOD WITH WHERE HE IS. SIT HIS ASS DOWN ? TRADE HIM.DODGERS MUST HIRE AREAL MANGER,IF F.O. LOVES D.R. PAY HIS MILLION AND TAKE LESSONS FROM A REAL MANGER. DODGERS CAN NOT HIT GREAT PITCHING

  4. Hey Roberts, I know you’re trying to protect Muncy’s self esteem, but really how’s having a .150 hitter batting cleanup working out for the team?
