Player of the Day – Fabio Martinez

Fabio “Wild Thing” Martinez spent six seasons in the Angels’ organization before heading to the Indians last season. Originally a starter, the Angels moved him to the pen after he missed most of the 2011 season but continued having problems with his control. Over his career, he’s walked 6.8 batters per 9 innings, getting as high as 12.4 per 9 in 2012. This year, he’s still walking nearly a batter an inning but he’s had two outings in which he’s pitched 6 innings without allowing a hit. Armed with a plus fastball and plus slider, the key for Martinez is throwing strikes, which is obviously easier said than done. At 24, time is running out for Wild Thing to turn his career around.
