Dodgers: New Cody Bellinger Injury Update Says Outfielder Could Miss Padres Series

The Dodgers have been without All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger for more than a week as recovers from a lower leg injury suffered in Oakland. Back on April 5th, Cody hustled out of the box on a weak groundball to the right side. Athletics reliever Reymin Guduan stomped on Belli’s leg as the two converged at first base and the LA outfielder hasn’t been seen since.

According to Dave Roberts, Bellinger’s left calf is still swollen and a bit discolored. And as of pregame on Wednesday, he still wasn’t running at full speed. While he’s eligible to come off the injured list on Friday, that still might be a best-case scenario.

I think anything’s possible. I just hesitate to put a date on it. I just want Cody to get better each day and improve and when the staff feels he’s ready to go, then we’ll activate him.

Notably, the Dodgers travel to San Diego on Friday for the first of 19 much-anticipated games against the Padres this season. A few days ago, word was that a Friday activation was in the picture, now that’s probably not the case.

Adding fuel to the concern, Bellinger hasn’t been seen much on-field during pregame workouts over the last few days. But Doc confirmed that the 2019 MVP is putting in work.

He’s doing a lot of work down below with the trainers and the strength guys. [Tuesday] he did some running, some swinging. There’s some swelling that’s kind of healing as far as the discoloration of the leg. But right now, he’s just not where we feel he can go forward. I know I keep saying day to day. I just really don’t know when the timetable would be to return.

While you never want to be without a player of the caliber of Cody, the Dodgers have hardly missed a beat in his absence. After Wednesday night’s win, LA moves to 10-2 on the season and 6-1 without him. If he can’t make it back in time to play the Padres in San Diego, the two face off again the following weekend at Dodger Stadium.
