Dodgers News: Corey Knebel Activated, Joe Kelly Headed to the Injured List

For as active as the Dodgers were at the trade deadline, they didn’t do much to improve their bullpen. They acquired Danny Duffy to help with the relief team in September, but aside from that, there were;t any big or decent names added.

But they’ll be getting back a big one tonight. The Dodgers are activating Corey Knebel off of the 60-day injured list and he will be available out of the bullpen in the Phillies series. Knebel landed on the IL with a lat strain back in May and was shut down for a long time.

In 6 appearances at Triple-A during his rehab stint, Knebel threw 5.2 innings and struck out 11 batters. He gave up 1 earned run and walked just 1 batter in those outings, and his velocity reportedly looked very good. Dave Roberts had hinted last week that he could join the team on this road trip.

When he was healthy, Knebel made just 8 appearances for the Dodgers and struck out 9 batters in 6 innings. He did get charged with 3 earned runs in those appearances, but he looked very sharp and was getting a lot of swings and misses.

Adding Knebel into the back end of the bullpen gives the Dodgers a huge advantage as they make a push to win their division. Los Angeles had optioned outfielder Zach Reks back to Triple-A on Monday, opening a spot on the active roster for Knebel.

Joe Kelly was also placed on the injured list with an unspecified injury in the move. The Dodgers will still need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster before the game tonight though.

  1. Such a bunch of BS. MLB needs to look into clubs falsifying injuries.
Dodgers are the King’s of IL Manipulation

  2. Because he threw the ball and said he got hurt. You gota be kidding me. For real. Same as Turner.

  3. The Dodgers were not forthcoming about Kelley’s off season shoulder surgery. We didn’t find out until after the season started that he had the surgery. I think it was Kelley himself who, once the surgery was disclosed, said that he had asked the Dodgers to not make it public. Kelley, earlier this year, wasn’t available due to general body soreness, according to Dave Roberts.
Now, he’s suddenly out again? Geez.
I understand why some fans are speculating that this is just another roster move by the Dodgers.
But so often this season, it turns out to be something serious or at least more serious than we thought. We’ll see.
In any event, not surprising that 1 player returns (Knebel) and 1 player exits (Kelly).
Why can’t this team navigate through 1 day, not even 1 day, without an injury or “something else”?
Whether it’s avoidable or not, man, this gets old…

  4. It’s starting to look like to me that the Dodgers are sabotaging themselves. Starting to look like it’s all set up for the Vagiants. They want the Trick or treat clan in the playoff’s. Dodgers once again so arrogant and over confident…Has everyone forgot that Bauer is getting hosed? Nobody is talking about the injustice he’s getting….Betts, Kelli, Kershaw all making HUGE money to just sit out while Gamers like Chris Taylor, Muncy, Buehler, Urias etc are grinding their tail ends off….
