Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Revisits Caveat to His World Series Promise

The Dodgers are no strangers to World Series expectations. For the last several years, it’s not out of the ordinary to see scores of analysts and insiders pick the Dodgers to win it all. Back in March, manager Dave Roberts made a bold proclamation that LA was going to take home their second championship in three years.

In an interview on The Show last week, Roberts didn’t back down from his championship guarantee, but did remind everyone of the caveat that he included in his original statement that was made on the Dan Patrick Show.

“I’m not going to go back on that comment. That’s the standard that we set for ourselves and there’s not a person that doesn’t feel that way, expect that from our ball club. The caveat was keeping our pitching healthy. To that statement, I did mean it. Pitching wins championships.”

Thus far, the Dodgers pitching has been far from healthy. Clayton Kershaw missed several weeks with an injury. Walker Buehler is currently on the 60-day IL with a flexor tendon strain. Newcomer Andrew Heaney has made just three starts due to a shoulder injury. Their best reliever, Blake Treinen, has been on the shelf since April with a shoulder injury.

But despite all that, the Dodgers staff ranks third in ERA (2.96) and second in WHIP (1.10) through Monday. It hasn’t been pretty at times, but thanks to Tony Gonsolin, Tyler Anderson, and Julio Urías consistently making starts, and an effective bullpen, the rotation has the best ERA in baseball (2.69).

The Dodgers also should get a pair of key arms back before the end of the season in Dustin May and the aforementioned Treinen. Danny Duffy could be available sometime after the All-Star break as well.

There could also be a trade for a pitcher or two before the trade deadline on August 2nd.

Pitching wins championships, and the Dodgers, and their manager, are fully aware of that simple fact.
