Dodgers News: David Freese Activated, Kyle Garlick and Edwin Rios Optioned

David Freese’s stint on the IL has finally come to an end as the Dodgers activated the infielder on Monday morning.

As a result of the move, both Kyle Garlick and Edwin Ríos have been optioned to Oklahoma City.

Freese proved to be an important piece to the Dodgers before suffering a left hamstring strain in late June. Appearing in only 56 games, he’s batting .308 with 8 home runs and a .999 OPS.

While somewhat short, Rios’ time with the team was impressive. He recorded his first career MLB hit on June 29 against the Colorado Rockies and finished his first stint batting .267 with a .421 OBP in 8 games.

Garlick, who’s name has become more familiar to Dodgers fans thanks to his extended time with the team this year, played in 25 games while batting .216 and recording 2 home runs — including one off of Madison Bumgarner —  with 4 RBI.

I’m currently a junior at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, and I have a passion for sports journalism. I grew up in the LA area and am a diehard fan of the Dodgers, Lakers, Rams, UCLA, Kings. My favorite Dodgers memory was watching Kershaw tear up after the team won the 2017 NLCS and advanced to the World Series for the first time in his career. After college, I plan on either pursuing a career as a sports journalist or working in sports law.

  1. Garlick and Rios were going to be the first 2 to go. And even if Beatty is next; LA is giving him a real pat on the back by keeping him a couple more days. He really shined bright for his short stint with the big club. A few extra days of MLB pay is nothing to sneeze at. He will be back soon.

  2. I think Beaty will end up being trade bait. Rios and Garlick have no trade value. They needed room for Seager and Freese. The only other move they will need to make is a pitching spot for Scott Alexander. In that case Rosscup will be optioned.

    1. If the Dodgers trade Beatty they are stupid. That kid is a hitting machine. I can’t believe “Dave” does not use him more often than he does.
