Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman Changes Agents After Tense Free Agency

At this point, everyone in baseball knows that free agency didn’t go all that great for Freddie Freeman, He was expected to get a deal from the Braves to stick around for his entire career before inking a deal with the Dodgers. But that deal never came, and it seemed like there was very little contact at all when the lockout ended.

There were plenty of stories around that time about the Braves front office not reaching out and trading for Matt Olson. Freddie further fueled the fire when he sort of laughed off the tears of Atlanta GM Alex Anthopoulos at his Dodgers press conference.

And now, it sounds like Freddie is really done with the way his agent got things done. The Dodgers’ first baseman is reportedly leaving Excel Sports Management and will seek out new representation. The timing of that is interesting given that it’s right after the Braves series.

Excel netted Freddie a $162 million deal over 6 years with the Dodgers. But it’s safe to say that he wasn’t thrilled with the way that entire process played out. And while we may never know all of the details, he’s here in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.

My Two Cents

Fans will run with this in any direction that they want to. Many have already said that he really wanted to be a Brave for life and that he doesn’t want to be a member of the Dodgers. But just because he wasn’t happy that his agent fumbled the process doesn’t mean that Freddie doesn’t want to be here. Baseball is still a business, and agents still need to get the job done.

UPDATE: Freddie Freeman released the following statement in the wake of the report:

“Last weekend in Atlanta was a very emotional time for me and my family. I am working through some issues with my longtime agents at Excel. My representation remains a fluid situation and I will update if needed.”
