Dodgers News: Juan Uribe Wins Wilson Defensive Player Of The Year

With the major awards in baseball scheduled to be announced next week, the Dodgers continue to be successful in the minor award categories.

This week, Dodger ace Clayton Kershaw won the Players’ Choice for National League Outstanding Pitcher of the Year, pitcher Zack Greinke won the NL Silver Slugger for pitchers and Dodger minor league Nick Buss was named a Topp’s Triple-A All-Star.

The official Dodgers Twitter account tweeted the news about the latest Dodger to win an award:

The Wilson awards are slightly different than other awards because there’s only one winner per team. In addition to the overall AL and NL Defensive Players of the Year, Wilson also awards AL and NL Defensive Teams of the Year and one Defensive Player of the Year per team. The awards started in 2012 and are considered an attempt to mimic Rawlings’ Gold Glove awards. The winners were announced on MLB Network today.

Uribe was chosen as the Dodgers representative after losing out on the NL Gold Glove for third baseman last week. The free agent third baseman was a bright spot for the Dodgers at third base, providing solid defense all season after regaining his starting position.

The 35-year-old third baseman had just five errors this season in just over 900 innings. He did very well in advanced stats at third base as he was 22 runs above average in total zone defense and was worth 15 runs saved above an average third baseman.

After two dismal seasons  with the Dodgers, Uribe recovered in the final year of his contract to provide the Dodgers with a consistent contributor in all aspects of the game. The award just validated the hard work it took for him to come back and help the team.
