On a team laced with plenty of talent as the Los Angeles Dodgers are, unsung heroes so to speak often play a pivotal role at one point or various points of the lengthy regular season. Fitting that description this season for the Dodgers is Kiké Hernandez.

The 24-year-old utility man has played all three outfield positions this season, along with receiving time at second base and shortstop. Hernandez understands the versatility is what’s earned him a spot on the active roster, according to Bill Plunkett of the OC Register:

Yeah, it’s the only spot for me right now,” Hernandez said. “We have a lot of guys that have been every-day players for a lot of years. I haven’t done anything yet. I can’t complain about wanting more playing time.”

Hernandez has previously stated he would rather compete for inconsistent playing time at the Major League level than start every day in the Minors. With Howie Kendrick’s hamstring strain, Hernandez may soon find himself as the replacement at second base, which he said prior to Kendrick’s injury he’s confident in his ability to play:

I believe I can play second base (in the majors) for a long time,” Hernandez said before the game when asked if he had a preferred position. “It is what it is. I’d much rather be here, playing part time, than in the minors playing every day. But my goal is to play every day. That’s my target.”

In 123 plate appearances, the Puerto Rico native is hitting .293/.341/.520, with five home runs and 15 RBIs. He hit two home runs over the last two games at PNC Park, with both sailing over the center field fence. Kendrick isn’t expected to play Monday night and his status moving forward has yet to be determined.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly acknowledged after Sunday’s loss that Hernandez is among the players who will be considered to fill the void at second base, but stopped short of naming him the replacement.
