Dodgers News: McGwire Not Interested In Speaking To Canseco

[new_royalslider id=”239″] If anyone thought that Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire and his former Oakland A’s teammate Jose Canseco would bury the hatchet from their past complications, it appears they’d be wrong.

According to Mark Saxon of ESPN, McGwire has no intention of making amends with Canseco:

It’s too late. I don’t care to ever speak to him again,” McGwire told ESPNLosAngeles.com on Wednesday. “What he did was wrong.”

During the A’s commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the team’s 1989 World Series victory last weekend, Canseco apologized to McGwire, who was absent from the event.

The source of the strain in their relationship is due to Canseco’s claim that McGwire used performance-enhancing drugs in his 2005 book, “Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big.”

It’s an act that Canseco said he wished he hadn’t done:

I regret writing the book for sure,” Canseco said. “I battled and fought with the thought of, ‘I wish I never used chemicals or steroids.’ But I don’t see how back then when I was only 19, 20 years old, I didn’t really know the situation.”

This wasn’t Conseco’s first attempt at asking for McGwire’s forgiveness. He also tried apologizing at a Dodgers home game in 2012 by wearing a shirt that read, “Sorry for everything Mark.”

At the time, McGwire was the St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach. Despite accusing McGwire, who confessed to using PEDs in 2010, Canseco thinks of him as a role model:

Mark, to me, when I played with him, I looked up to him,” Canseco told reporters. “I idolized him for a lot of reasons — the guy was on the field, he was off the field. It haunts me till this day that I said those things about him, even though obviously they were true. I could have gone about it a different way and gotten my point across.”

McGwire played 17 seasons in the Majors — 12 with the Athletics and five with the Cardinals. He hit a record 70 home runs in 1998 and led MLB with 65 homers the following season.

The Dodgers hired McGwire as the hitting coach in November of 2012.
