Dodgers News: NL Cy Young Front Runner Bewildered by Disastrous Outing vs LA

On paper, the Dodgers game on Sunday afternoon should have gone much differently. They had rookie Ryan Pepiot going head-to-head with potential Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara. He has gone 7 or more innings in every other start this month until he ran into the Los Angeles offense this weekend.

Alcantara immediately got hit hard by the Dodgers. Will Smith singled home Mookie Betts in the 1st, and Cody Bellinger launched his 17th home run of the season with Joey Gallo on base. They added to it in the  3rd with a Max Muncy single and another couple of big hits the next inning that knocked Sandy out of the game.

For Alcantara, it was by far the shortest outing of his 2022 season. The Dodgers made him throw 89 pitches and hung up more runs on him than any team has all season. After the loss, Alcantara couldn’t seem to figure out what had happened and why he

“I don’t know what happened… I think they have a lot of stuff to look for something for pitchers.”

It’s hard to tell what he’s hinting at, but we can assume that Sandy is pointing towards the Dodgers preparation. And they looked locked in on every pitch that he threw in their direction. His ERA skyrocketed from 1.92 before the outing to 2.19 after. That puts Tony Gonsolin at the top of the National League for ERA.

But more than anything, it’s a good reminder that the Dodgers can hit very good pitching. As Dave Roberts said after the game, Alcantara is the type of pitcher that they will be seeing in the playoffs. Sunday showed the league that they are ready for it.

  1. It seems that the Brewers have the type of pitching staff that the Dodgers will be seeing in the playoffs. And LA just cant seem to score runs against Milwaukee. We were completely shut down again last night. Hard to believe the Brewers and that pitching staff are close to being a 500 team. Scary that we might have to play against them in the playoffs.

I will see Alcantara pitch against LA in Miami later this week. My first time to see a game in the Marlins stadium. I will be sitting in the 4th row behind the visitors (Dodgers) dugout with my dark blue Cody Bellinger jersey on. I would expect that Sandy will pitch much better in his home ballpark. Then after playing 4 against the Marlins on the road its off to New York to play 3 games against the Mets. I hope that Sherzer and DeGrom both pitch in that series. To think that we might face the Mets in the playoffs against those 2 pitchers is scary.

Anyway I realize that these games we are playing now are not do or die as we have an insurmountable lead in the NL west. But it would be encouraging to beat teams with those outstanding pitchers.

    1. “…LA just cant seem to score runs against Milwaukee.”

Well this comment certainly isn’t aging well.

  2. Yeah, they are cheating. Something is off about this team. They seem to know each pitch that is thrown.

    1. yes, that’s why Muncy was in the tank for two months and Belli is still chilling there.

    2. Honestly, if they did…would Bellinger, Muncy and Taylor all be hitting around .200? This theory makes no sense. The Dodgers do their homework, their advanced scouting and metrics group are the best in baseball. Their prep is second to none. That’s it, that’s the advantage.

  3. Alcantra as with The Mets and ATL pitchers west coast is a different brand of baseball not just blown up by NY media it’s real comp.
