Dodgers: Padres to Throw a Bullpen Game Tonight Against Los Angeles

The Dodgers and Padres will kick off a 3-game series starting tonight in San Diego. And while the Padres are much further out of the division lead than many would have thought by now, that doesn’t mean these games aren’t huge for Los Angeles.

And the Dodgers do not officially have a starting pitcher as of now. Many expect it will be Julio Urias coming off of the injured list, though that could change. But they will face off against the Padres bullpen as they battle with injuries to their starting staff as well.

The Padres will start RHP Pierce Johnson to open the game against the Dodgers. San Diego has one of the better bullpens in all of baseball with a 3.12 earned run average and a combined 3.7 fWAR to go along with a 3.91 FIP.

But lately, the Padres bullpen has had a little bit of a meltdown. They’ve combined for a 4.07 ERA in the month of August, ranking them 18th in baseball for their relievers. The Dodgers will need to take advantage of that slide and win game 1.

That means that the Dodgers could also be seeing Yu Darvish on Thursday, depending on how he progresses from a back injury.

  1. The Padres starting rotation has been decimated. They have been forced to throw more bullpen games than the Dodgers. The Dodgers should sweep this series.

    1. They will have to deal with Blake Snell, a LHP on Wednesday to do so. If Dodgers wish to sweep this series they will have to improve dramatically against Padre starters. Dodgers are 3 and 7 against Padres so far for a reason. No offense.

      1. Snell is slumping, Darvish is injured the pods BP is failing. Dodgers are on a hot streak. dodgers win the series easily and hopefully sweep!

  2. As always the Dodgers this year – on paper – they should win every game. Then they end up actually having to play the darned game on the field and therein is the problem. Will the offense take the night off? Will Roberts re-jigger the lineup for no apparent reason? Will Bellinger start and go ohfer yet one more game? Who will get injured tonight? And finally, will the Giants continue to keep on winning or will they fall flat for a couple weeks.

We’re creeping right up on September baseball!
