Dodgers Players Participate in Spelling Bee at Camelback Ranch

Leave it to the Dodgers to keep it light early in spring training. On Wednesday at Camelback Ranch, the club split into 3 groups for a spelling bee during the morning team meeting.

Yes, a spelling bee.

As Bill Plunkett notes, the teams were split into high school grads, college educated, and international players, who neatly participated in Spanish.

The host of the competition was none other than Cal State Fullerton alum Justin Turner.

Right off the bat, this is cool. Importantly, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been known to find creative ways to facilitate team bonding. Most notably last spring, 4 players banded together to play a cover of 3 Doors Down’s “Kryptonite” for the clubhouse. However, there are times that the players themselves find a way to spice up the fun — much like September 2019’s organizational dress up day.

Doc cracked a smile when asked about the festivities and how they came about.

Some of the players came up to me and, you know, we talk about having not only the best players but the smartest players, so we put that to the test and we did a little spelling bee.

Rest assured, one day we will be able to witness this activity with our own eyes after SportsNet LA’s “Backstage: Dodgers” series airs the fun.

As for the million-dollar question on who one, Plunkett did some research.

So Clayton Kershaw’s high school guys beat out the college kids and the boys from Vanderbilt. And no student loan debt? Good deal.
