The Los Angeles Dodgers led by two runs when the bottom of the ninth inning began. Adam Liberatore took the mound after pitching the eighth, and Yimi Garcia and J.P. Howell warmed-up in the bullpen. Clearly, closer Kenley Jansen was unavailable, but why?

After the walk-off loss Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said simply Jansen was unavailable while refusing to provide specifics. A team spokesman later said Jansen couldn’t be called on because of sickness and the closer refused to speak with media.

With the Dodgers having returned to Los Angeles in the early hours of Thursday morning, the day’s plans include Jansen getting checked on, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:

While that may be cause for concern, Rosenthal adds the matter isn’t believed serious:

Jansen has previously missed time with atrial fibrillation and he had an irregular heartbeat during a trip to Colorado in 2012. He underwent surgery to address the heartbeat issue in October 2012 and has been fine since.

With his closer unavailable, Mattingly used four relievers in the fateful ninth inning — Liberatore, Garcia, Howell and Chris Hatcher. Hatcher was the only of the quartet to record an out, though it was Nolan Arenado’s game-winning sacrifice fly.

Dating back to May 29 and stretching to July 1, the Dodgers are currently in the midst of playing 34 games in 34 days. Their lone off-day in June is on the 11th and they begin a 10-game road trip in Chicago on June 22.

Thursday is the start of a seven-game homestand, beginning with a four-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals. Thursday is also Kenley Jansen bobblehead night.

    1. Donny Baseball is THE worst manager in the Big Leagues. The Dodgers win a lot of games. Of course they do! They have a ton of talent. Just think what they could do with a great manager. In the 1950s Casey Stengel won everything in sight. Prior to coming to the Yankees he had been a mediocre manager for years, but with Mantle, Berra, Whitey Ford, etc. who couldn’t win everything. Apparently Donny can’t. He has all the talent in the world and get only OK results with it. He makes bad decisions every night. Over several years now, he has gotten stuck on certain relief pitchers that just can’t do it, but he keeps running them out there again and again. Last nights after game interview was a fiasco. If Kenly had a physical problem, just say it then! Don’t rub your neck and give a dumb stare into space. Every game you loose is gone. No matter if it’s Colorado or St. Louise, a win is a win and a lose is a lose. The Dodgers have a zillion dollars, Steal Bruce Bochy from the Giants. Just because you were a great player doesn’t mean you will be a great manager. That’s been proven time and time again. The “Money Ball” guys should get a manager that just wins.

  1. The bullpen game was a crap idea. Understand that it’s stupid and that they lost 2 games because of it and move on. The smart guys are out thinking themselves. Pulled a Pete. Now move on and NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!!

  2. Besides the pitching, why don’t we start putting the best 8 players out there.I know we have injuries, but not always the best 8 go out there.last season, Sundays were the ” give away game”.Donnie is trying harder now…let’s try and win every game …this is not AYSO
