Dodgers: Russell Martin Headed to Injured List

Russell Martin has been placed on the Injured List and Rocky Gale has been recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his place on the roster.

Lower back inflammation is not an injury that should keep Martin sidelined for an extended period of time, unless of course the severity of it is being downplayed.

Russell Martin has seen his fair share of at bats in his second go in a Dodger uniform as Austin Barnes’s primary backup. Martin has played in six games with 22 plate appearances and has slashed .333/.500/.600 which is obviously going to be a loss.

It helps that Austin Barnes has been setting the world ablaze with his bat, slashing .364/.500/.682. Barnes started a little over half of the Dodgers’ games so far and figures to know take up the lion’s share of starts.

The corresponding roster move was for Rocky Gale who spent time in the Dodgers organization last season. Gale has 22 career plate appearances at age 31 and is very defense-oriented considering a .091/.091/.227 slash line in the majors.

Overall, this presents a blow to the roster and the clubhouse and we wish Russell Martin a speedy recovery in whatever he is dealing with.

KERSHAW HIT HARD AGAIN IN HIS SECOND REHAB START

Daniel Preciado

My name is Daniel Preciado and I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore Sport Analytics major and Cognitive Science and Economics dual minor at Syracuse University. When I am not in New York, I live in Whittier, California --- not too far from Chavez Ravine. I am pretty old-school for being an analytics guy and I will always embrace debate. Also, Chase Utley did absolutely nothing wrong.

  1. This team is falling apart fast. Injuries and the first tough opponent they face is showing them they aren’t as good as they thought

    1. I spent one week at Spring Training and expected exactly what we are getting. Not that good and not that bad. Never a bad time at a baseball game.

  2. I really liked Russell Martin since way back, but the guy is too old for that tough position. But I’m sure he was a steal, as far as money. I forgot that’s just how we operate.

    1. I agree with Gary Granade that perhaps they should go with one of the minor league catchers – Will Smith(AAA), Ruiz(AA). Perhaps they are not major-league ready yet. You won’t know unless one sees how they are against major-league competitiion. However I think another reason they won’t be brought up(to the majors) is their major-league service time starts once they are in the majors. Look at why Vlad Guererro Jr.(BlueJays) or some of the other hot prospects in the high minors are being brought-up. Kris Bryant of the Cubs was kept at AAA when most baseball-people felt he should be in the majors. The major league team wants that player to be under their control for a little bit longer.
