Dodgers: The Korean Monster Is An International Superstar

The us he’s the Korean Monster – the guy who takes the ball in the middle of the rotation and quietly does a solid job. However, to the world and in places like South Korea; Hyun-Jin Ryu is a larger-than-life international superstar.

Recently on twitter, Joseph Kim tweeted photos of Ryu surrounded by a horde of international media members. Just clicking through the pictures, one can see what a worldwide sensation Ryu is outside of the United States where he makes his living.

I think back to 2013 when the Dodgers routed the Blue Jays in Toronto. After the game, a large contingency of Korean fans showed staunch support for their hero.

A large group of Korean fans cheered loudly when Ryu’s name was announced before the game, and again when he walked in from the bullpen. Waving flags and chanting, they kept up the noise through much of his outing.

“That was definitely more than I expected here in Toronto,” Ryu said through a translator. “I was very appreciative of that, it was a big help for me.”

Moreover, Ryu is coming off a tremendous season for the Dodgers. He went 7-3 with a 1.01 WHIP and 1.97 ERA, combined with 89 strikeouts. Ryu accepted the Dodgers qualifying offer to remain with the Dodgers in 2019.

  1. Ryu was the most consistent pitcher this year. He was definitely one of the reasons the Dodgers made it back to the World Series.
