Dodgers: Tommy Kahnle and Caleb Ferguson Delayed in Their Recovery

The Dodgers play one more game tonight against the Angels before heading off to Colorado. They’ll start the regular season at Coors Field against the Rockies over the weekend on a little road trip before returning to Los Angeles for their home opener. With that in mind, there are still a few roster decisions to be made.

Dave Roberts already clarified that the position players are set. They just need to figure out a few of the bullpen spots before getting their 28-man roster locked in. But the Dodgers will be without at least two guys that they expected to be ready.

Both Tommy Kahnle and Caleb Ferguson are coming off of Tommy John surgery. The relievers have made Spring Training appearances but will not be ready to go for Opening Day. Dave Roberts clarified that both of them will likely be ready towards the end of April or the start of May.

“Tommy is doing really well. He ended up pitching in a minor league game and threw an inning, and he was 94 to 96 with a great change. There’s no need to push him right now. I’m hesitant to put a hard date on it, but I would say the end of April beginning of May is reasonable.”

Doc had previously said that Kahnle would use the first month as an extended Spring Training. At this point, they don’t feel the need to rush him back just to start the season. The Dodgers would much rather have him healthy and ready to go down the stretch.

Ferguson appeared in 3 games during Spring Training and got knocked around a little bit. He allowed 3 earned runs across 2.2 innings of work for the Dodgers. Kahnle did not appear in an official Cactus League game but apparently did throw in a game on the backfield.

  1. Why schedule a game with the Dodgers at Coors field in early April? It’s a coin toss between 75 degrees and 35 on any day right now. LA should start at home and Colorado delayed as long as possible. It boggles my mind.
