Dodgers: Tony Gonsolin Might Be the Best Backend Starter in MLB

Think back to before the season began, even during the MLB lockout. There were so many questions about the Dodgers starting staff and how they would approach things, especially without a resolution to Trevor Bauer’s situation. Experts around baseball predicted that the staff would be by far their weakest link, and boy were they wrong.

The Dodgers have one of the best starting pitching staffs in baseball right now. One through five, they are all competing, even with Andrew Heaney on the injured list. But one underrated aspect of this rotation has been Tony Gonsolin.

Gonsolin was one of the big question marks heading into 2022. There were many that believed he did not have a spot in the Dodgers rotation, something that he proved to be wrong immediately in Spring Training.

Flashforward to a few starts into the season and Gonsolin is very much one of the better backend starters in all of baseball. He has pitched to a 1.64 ERA and 3.41 FIP across his first 5 starts of the year. He has gone 2-0 and punched out 18 batters in 22 innings of work. The command issues appear to be more under control, and he’s dotting some of his best stuff.

It’s early, but there is a very good chance that Gonsolin emerges as one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball, not just with the Dodgers.
