Dodgers, Twins Trade Likely On Without Boston, Mookie Betts to LA Still in Works

Another morning, another Jon Heyman tweet that gives Dodger fans hope.

If you’re getting deja vu, so are we over here at Dodgers Nation. We have written on this back and forth at least once. Or maybe twice. It’s been interminable. Dodger fans have collectively felt like this has swung back and forth for an eternity.

I have read many tweets from Dodger fans who are so tired of this debacle that they are willing to just let Mookie Betts remain a Red Sock. A former MVP. In some ways I cannot blame them, this has been emotionally exhausting, but I digress.

A Jon Heyman tweet every morning has been like a cup of coffee: expected. At this point this does not come as a surprise. To be fair, Jon Heyman does have real sources and is a professional, so it is hard not to lend credence to his propaganda. Also, it helps when the end all be all of baseball sources…

Rosenthal Confirms

Ken Rosenthal confirmed Jon Heyman’s tweet that the teams are, in fact, talking about a deal again, and that the Twins are back involved.

Rosenthal takes it further than Heyman and includes details, which kind of says the difference between the two of them.

Heyman adds another iteration of with Rosenthal is saying.

This is much better than some of the armchair general manager deals that have been floating around. This resembles the deal that was already on the table and the deal most of us thought was final.

Will This Deal Really Happen?

My personal premonition is that this deal was always going to happen. The pressure from the MLBPA definitely helps. One would have to posture that the negative attention to the Red Sox front office would push them into completing the deal in some fashion. A first year GM would not want to earn the reputation of acting in bad faith. As always, time will tell. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

  1. Mookie saying that he wanted to stay in Boston is, in my opinion, just rhetoric. Guys don’t want to be perceived badly by the public on their paths to riches, so saying that he wanted to stay in Boston serves as obligatory to the Red Sox Nation only and assumes all Bostonians are naive enough to buy the bull. What does saying ‘I want 420M over 12 years and Then saying ‘I want to stay in Boston’ mean? It means that a fellah is playing both sides of the table at the expense of the ball club and the public while alienating himself to the fans of LA. Not smart at this juncture. Mookie, you got Some ‘splaining to do’. Baseball is a business with zero loyalty to the fan base. Money is the God here, and you got the right to grab fistfuls of it if some ball club wants to pay it. You consider yourself one of the best and you want to be paid that way. At the end of the day, most fans are not idiots. We already know that you will play for the team that gives you the most cash so the snow job is unnecessary.

  2. Wonder two things- 1) How bad was the reaction in Boston to the trade & did that impact things?
    2) Were Red Sox owners miffed Angels relatively got a much sweeter deal & decided to renegotiate?

We don’t know who the mystery prospect from the Angels was- but Stripling & Andy Pages are players the Sox wouldn’t mind having on the cheap too.

    1. Angels getting Pederson is a much better deal but he makes $7.75 Million compared to Verdugo at $550,000 and the Sox are trying to save on payroll

  3. Baseball loves stats and records. I think we’re setting one here. This could be the longest, most convoluted trade/non-trade in the history of baseball. I don’t blame Friedman for this one. The Sox look to be the ones dealing in bad faith. Everyone knew about Graterol’s injury history. Now they’re surprised? Baloney. Friedman made a good trade to pick up Betts and Price (at half price) in exchange for Verdugo and Maeda. The (separate?) giveaway of Pederson and Stripling to the Angels for a nobody utility infielder still looks weak. We should have got much more in return. With Pederson losing his arbitration case, we should have just kept him. Stripling is a valuable utility pitcher who can fill any pitching role. The Sox have a new GM. And he’s looking really bad right now, like a guy who shook hands and said “deal”, and then turns around and says “I changed my mind”. In the real world people are shunned or sued for that kind of bad faith, but cheating by stealing signs is bad faith too, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised by this latest act of bad faith.

    1. And all this fuss over a 1 year rental in Betts. what concerns me is that Betts told Jim Rice he did not or does not want to leave Boston. If that’s the case, it appears obvious to me that Betts really does not want to come here. I do agree with you, Dodger106W that the deal with the Angels is nothing more than dumping some salary because Dodgers might as well have received nothing compared to what little they are getting in return

    2. Regardless of whether the Red Sox are implicated in cheating (reports say any cheating was on par with that in the rest of the league…), you realize that Bloom was not the Red Sox GM until this off season (as in 2 off seasons after their 2018 WS championship), right???

  4. Thank you Dodger 106W for telling it like it is! Wish the modern spots press had the balls to say it, but they are too afraid of giving offense.

  5. I do not blame the Dodgers FO on this.
But we should have splash the cash and got players that we actually needed for a sizable window with out trading with the Devil or having to give up Verdugo This was never going to be more then a Rental. And what we gave up for a Rental is not half price in fact it is BS! Boston got something for Betts as of now they will get nothing because no one wants to deal with that kind of wishy washy good today bad tomorrow kind of dealings. What you say and do (reputation) goes along way with how people view you as a business partner.
The fact that they cheated goes to show there is no Honor in the ball club. Even though the were Honored as World Series champions.

The Dodgers FO knew that they screwed up this offseason they started to get feedback immediately after they didn’t get the job done from staunchest of fans and just about every media sources, And tried to make up for it with this deal.
At this point I hope this deal goes away as I don’t think it was good for the dodgers Betts never wanted to play here and we are going to give away too many good players for a rental….
as I’ve stated before they needed to get the job done with free agents I hope that they don’t make this deal worse by giving away a lot of our youth just to save face.
As far as I’m concerned they’ve made their bed they need to get out of this deal and suffer the fate that they brought upon themselves with their fan base.
I wanna win a World Series as much as next the next guy but with these guys in charge ( dumb and dumber ) I can’t see how it’s ever going to happen.

I’m so down on our front office and the state of baseball as a whole where cheaters don’t receive any punishment and now fun offices can run a muck and not have any consequences the whole thing sickens me they’ve taken a beautiful game and corrupted it.

I love the dodgers and always will but the people running them are just as bad if not worse than any management I’ve seen thus far.

The commissioners corrupt Boston and the Astro’s can go suck an egg.
And Andrew and katsan could be traded for a washing machine as far as I am concerned.
