Dodgers: Walker Buehler Talks About Non-Rivalry with Padres in 2020

Dodgers ace Walker Buehler joined the guys at Barstool Sports’ Starting 9 podcast last week where they talked about LA’s “business trip” through the early part of the postseason.

Of course, the 2020 season was pretty easy for the Dodgers, all things considered. Few teams presented a challenge for the boys in blue as they lost only one series all year. However, the San Diego Padres did their best to try and step up to the plate as challengers against LA. The problem for them is each time they failed.

In this Starting 9 interview, Buehler firmly denies San Diego the label of a “rivalry” as he talks about the matchups between the two clubs during the regular season and into the playoffs.

The focus was on the highly anticipated NLDS between the NL West clubs where Buehler discussed the Dodgers’ mindset in that series.

San Diego plays with a lot of emotion, and I don’t think it’s a conscious effort to send a message or anything like that, but we just handled it and moved on. And all of our guys were on board with how we handled it and felt good about it.

Despite all the pomp and circumstance surrounding that series, the Dodgers swept through the Padres with relative ease en route to a world title in 2020. So with all the chatter that Padre fans have tried to muster up in online circles, hearing Walker talk about them so passively is honestly pretty funny.

  1. The “Up and coming” team has to beat the “Division leader” about half the time for it to be close to a “rivalry”. Sorry San Diego…

  2. Walker “Stellar” Buehler (21) is right no rivalry against the Pads only against the loud mouth punk Manny “Rat” Machado!

  3. The Giants have been our only rival for more than 60 years. The Padres are merely division opponents like the D-backs. It is similar to the Cubs situation. The Cardinals have been their bitter rivals for a long time. Now the Brewers are trying to create a rivalry since the cities are close together and there is the heated rivalry between the Bears and Packers. Truth is, Padre fans look at us with envy.
