Dodgers: Will Smith Bests Bellinger for Franchise History

Dodgers rookie sensation Will Smith made franchise history with a big showing in Miami. Smith surpasses Cody Bellinger for most RBIs and HRs through 23 games of play.

SportsNet LA anchor Alanna Rizzo hit us with the stats in the below tweet.

But that was when Will was just getting started. Smith clubbed another home run — this one a 2 run shot to pad his stats even further.

The 24 year-old catcher is on pace for record-breaking numbers throughout his career. During Tuesday’s game against the Miami Marlins, Smith secured his 24th RBI (and later 25th and 26th) in just 23 games played. Cody Bellinger initially held that record with 23 RBIs back in 2017.

Smith is rocking a batting average of .329, with a robust OPS of 1.201. He’s added 9 HRs, and 26 RBI’s in just those 23 games played. Smith is on pace to break many records at this point, and he’s only going to get better from here. Not only did Smith pass Bellinger in runs batted in, but he passed Belli’s HR mark for most in 23 games of play.

Smith has early the potential of being as good as Cody Bellinger, and they are both just 24 years old. Bellinger had a great season in 2017, and now, in 2019, he is one of the favorites to win the NL MVP. Smith will develop and still has time to grow. He could very well be in MVP talks too, in a year or two.

Moreover, Will Smith recorded his 1st career multi-HR game, as well. This is a night he will not forget. As the great Dodgers broadcaster, Joe Davis, said, “Welcome to Miami, Will Smith!”

Will Smith is a unique talent, and he has a chance of setting many more record down the line. The Dodgers have found their franchise catcher.

  1. Very exciting! I honestly think Will Smith is going to be a better big league catcher than Keibert Ruiz. Will Smith is definitely on fire right now, but let’s see how he does once the league adjusts to him, remember how crazy good Joc Pederson was during the first half of his rookie season? It would be awesome if we brought Lux up in September and he continued his triple A mashing up in the big leagues and we used him as a weapon in the postseason because none of the pitchers would know how to pitch to him, just a dream of mine…

  2. Will is proving he belongs. Don’t over work him as he has had a long season in the minors and the majors. We need him fo the playoffs. We want hits and home runs not just the long ball. Remember, in the playoffs HRS are at a premium.
