2 Contenders Considered Co-Favorites To Land Former Dodgers MVP Cody Bellinger This Offseason

One of the biggest free agents on the open market this winter is former Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger. Bellinger saw a resurgent year with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, and he is expected to receive a massive deal in free agency.

There has been some talk about a reunion between Bellinger and the Dodgers, but that remains unlikely at this point. LA is focused on adding starting pitching and probably doesn’t want to pay what it would take to land their former player.

However, two teams have emerged as co-favorites to land Bellinger according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today. This includes the Dodgers NL West rival, San Francisco Giants, and the New York Yankees.

“The Yankees and San Francisco Giants are widely viewed as the co-favorites now to sign free-agent center fielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger.”

Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today

The Yankees have long been interested in Bellinger, and the Giants could use a left-handed bat like his in their lineup. LA fans would much rather he head east to the Yankees than see him wearing a Giants jersey going forward.

Bellinger won the National League Comeback Player of the Year award in 2023 for his production, and he helped the Cubs contend when many didn’t believe in them. He hit .307 with 26 home runs and 97 runs batted in on the year. Bellinger also had an OPS of .881 for the season.

It was always a longshot for the Dodgers to be seriously interested in bringing back Bellinger, despite fans’ interest. With Scott Boras as his agent, it makes things even more difficult, since he and the Dodgers typically don’t see eye to eye.

Hopefully, Bellinger can head anywhere other than in the NL West, and he deserves to get paid big-time. Even though he isn’t on the team any longer, fans still wish him well, except when he plays against LA, of course.

  1. If he signs with the Giants, my stock response to his name will be, “Cody who? Never heard of him.”
