Mat Latos Struggles, Offense Sputters Late In Loss To Pirates
Hernandez and Ellis reached base to start the inning, but a grounder by Guerrero became a double play after a review at first. Andre Ethier pinch-hit for Latos and grounded out to end the inning.
Pedro Baez was the first reliever out of the bullpen for the Dodgers. He allowed a single to McCutchen and almost allowed a double to Ramirez, but Van Slyke threw out Ramirez at second. Baez got out of the inning without allowing any runs.
Gonzalez singled with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Van Slyke flew out to the warning track in center to end the inning. Baez retired the side in order in his second inning of work.
Joc Pederson pinch-hit for Hernandez with one out in the seventh and blooped a single to center. Yasmani Grandal then pinch-hit for Ellis, but he grounded into a double play to end the inning. Luis Avilan took over the mound in the bottom half and struck out the side, despite allowing two baserunners.
Guerrero led off the eighth with a single, but was erased on a double play by pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo. Rollins then flew out to end the inning. Joel Peralta took the mound for the Dodgers in the bottom of the inning. He retired the Pirates in order to send the game to the ninth.
Kendrick led off the final inning with a single to right. Gonzalez flew out, but Van Slyke hit an RBI double past a diving McCutchen to cut the deficit to one. Puig grounded one to third and was safe at first when Sean Rodriguez was off the bag. After review, Puig was called out. Pederson drew a walk to put two on with two out for Grandal. The Dodger catcher struck out to end the game. Dodgers lose, 6-5.
