After a couple of quiet innings, the Dodgers’ offense came back to life in the fifth. Ethier got on base for the third time with a double to right but was thrown out after Gonzalez hit into a fielder’s choice.

With Gonzalez on first base, Howie Kendrick hit his third home run of the season to give the Dodgers a five-run lead at 8-3. The Padres made a pitching change and went with Chris Rearick, but it didn’t help as Uribe hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, to extend the Dodgers’ lead.

The Padres couldn’t match the Dodger’s offensive output as McCarthy continued to pitch well after giving up the two home runs in the first. McCarthy retired the three Padre batters he faced in the fifth inning, running his streak of consecutive batters retired to 12.

Odrisamer Despaigne took the mound for the Padres in the sixth and retired the Dodgers in order. Solarte became the first Padre to reach base since the first inning with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth. Kemp followed with a base hit and Upton hit his second home run of the game to cut the Dodgers’ lead to 10-6.

However, perhaps more costly for the Dodgers, McCarthy signaled to the Dodgers dugout after throwing the pitch that Upton homered on, and he was removed from the game after a visit to the mound by a trainer and manager Don Mattingly. SportsNet LA’s television replay showed McCarthy shaking his hand before signaling to the dugout.

Friday’s call-up Sergio Santos replaced McCarthy and quickly found himself in a jam. Alonso greeted him with a triple to deep center field that broke free from Pederson’s glove on a lunging attempt to make the catch.

Alonso scored on Norris’ grounder to Rollins and Amarista hit a two-out double before Santos could get out of the inning with the Dodgers clinging to a 10-7 lead. After Dale Thayer retired the Dodgers in order int he top of the seventh, Juan Nicasio did the same in the home half of the inning, getting Kemp looking on called strike three for the third out.

Kemp protested the call despite efforts to get him away from home plate umpire Marty Foster and he was subsequently ejected. Pederson drew a one-out walk in the eighth and he advanced to third base on Scott Van Slyke’s base hit that snuck under Clint Barmes’ glove on his diving attempt.

With the Padres infield playing in, Solarte made a diving catch to rob Rollins of a base hit and RBI. However, Thayer wouldn’t get out of the inning unscathed as Ethier lined an RBI single up the middle to tack on an insurance run and extend the Dodgers’ lead to 11-7.

The hit also knocked Thayer out of the game as he gave way to Brandon Maurer, who retired Gonzalez on a groundout to end the threat. Nicasio worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth to throw his second scoreless inning on the night.

Grandal reached on a one-out double in the ninth as Amarista, who was moved to center field, came up empty on a diving attempt at a catch. Maurer then walked pinch-hitter Alex Guerrero and got Uribe to hit a slow grounder to third that allowed both runners to move into scoring position.

Pederson drew a walk to load the bases, however Scott Van Slyke couldn’t cash in and flied out to center. With Yimi Garcia unavailable after appearing in three consecutive games and Joel Peralta battling dead arm, Chris Hatcer was called on in the ninth inning.

The right-hander promptly issued a leadoff walk to Amarista and responded by freezing pinch-hitter Jedd Gyorko with fastball on the outside corner for called strike three. With Myers at the plate, Amarista moved into scoring position on a pitch in the dirt that got away from Grandal.

Myers struck out on another ball that got away from Grandal, though he recovered it and threw to first base to complete the out. Amarista scored on Hatcher’s third wild pitch of the inning before getting Solarte swinging to strike out the side in the Dodgers’ 11-8 win over the Padres.
