Kendrick hit a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth to the right-center field gap but was thrown out attempting to stretch it to a triple. With the Diamondbacks again in a shift that moved Tomas to the right of second base, Gonzalez reached on an error as the third baseman was unable to cleanly field a grounder.

Tomas’ error didn’t haunt the Diamondbacks as Guerrero grounded out to end the inning on Chafin’s next pitch. Sergio Santos relieved Garcia and Scott Van Slyke replaced Guerrero in left field as part of a double switch by the Dodgers.

Goldschmidt promptly hit a leadoff double, then Santos recovered to get back-to-back strikeouts. He intentionally walked Owings and didn’t get the opportunity to face pinch-hitter Danny Dorn as Dodgers manager Don Mattingly called on Paco Rodriguez.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale countered Mattingly’s move by pinch hitting Jordan Pacheco for Dorn. The chess match between the managers ended in the Dodgers’ favor as Pacheco grounded out to end the inning.

Chafin gave up a leadoff double to Ethier in the 10th and gave way to Enrique Burgos. Uribe fouled off two sacrifice bunt attempts and went down swinging for the first out. After Yasmani Grandal pinch-hit for Ellis and drew a walk, Van Slyke struck out in his first at-bat of the game.

Pederson once more found himself batting at a crucial point in the game but dropped to 0-for-5 on the day with a grounder to second that ended the threat. Offense remained at a premium in extras as both Rodriguez and Burgos retired the side in order in the 11th.

Kiké Hernandez replaced Kendrick at second base and Juan Nicasio came out of the bullpen as part of a double switch. Nicasio struck out Pollock looking and gave up a one-out single to Goldschmidt. However, Trumbo then hit into an inning-ending 6-3 double play.

Evan Marshall was the next reliever up for the Diamondbacks and he sat the Dodgers down in order to send the game to the 13th. With J.P. Howell on the mound, Pacheco reached on a two-out single to left and the Dodgers’ shift worked against them as Aaron Hill singled to the vacated area to put runners on the corners with two outs.

With Cliff Pennington at the plate, the ball got away from Grandal and the catcher recovered to get the ball to Howell, who made a backward (blind) tag on Pacheco at the plate for the third out. Grandal then delivered at the plate with a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the 13th.

  1. Wow. What an ending. Grandal redeemed himself after the passed ball. Looks like his bat is heating up.

  2. Very cool. Kendrick’s stupid out at third earlier would a made this a shorter game though.
