Justin Turner was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth inning and Gonzalez cashed him in quickly with a two-run home run to the second deck in right field. Puig continued the hitting with a one-out single by a diving Ian Desmond. Ethier also made good contact, though his fly ball was tracked down at the wall in right-center field.

Flashbacks to Chicago arose with one out in the bottom of the fourth when a bank of lights down the third base line went out, sending the game into a delay that lasted one hour and 23 minutes. Bolsinger surprisingly remained in the game and needed just four pitches to end the inning.

Unlike Bolsinger, Zimmermman did not continue on after the delay. He gave way to Tanner Roark, who needed just seven pitches to retire the side. Included in that was two strikeouts, with one coming against Kiké Hernandez, who pinch-hit for Bolsinger.

Chin-hui Tsao was set to take the mound in the bottom of the fifth, only for some of the lights to again go out after nine minutes of play, thus sending the game into another delay. After 40 minutes of suspended play, the Nationals quickly jumped all over Tsao.

Roark hit a leadoff double, which was followed by a Yunel Escobar two-run home run that gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead. The lights once more went out between the fifth and sixth inning, with play this time being suspended until a time to be determined.
