Joc Pederson drew his second walk of the game in the fourth inning. The walk was also his fifth in the last six plate appearances. Callaspo followed with a base hit to right field that saw Pederson thrown out by Francoeur on his attempt to go first to third. Ellis lined out and Anderson struck out, ending what could’ve been a promising inning for the Dodgers.

The Phillies went away quietly in the bottom of the fourth, with all three batters retired on groundball outs. After Rollins drew a leadoff walk, the Dodgers executed a hit-and-run to put runners on the corners with no outs.

Ryan Howard made a diving stop to rob Gonzalez of a base hit, but couldn’t prevent a run from scoring on the RBI groundout. Pederson walked again in the fifth, this time to load the bases with two outs. With a pitch count over 100, Harang worked out of the jam by retiring Callaspo.

Hernandez reached on a two-out error by Gonzalez in the bottom of the fifth and promptly moved into scoring position by stealing second base. Anderson suddenly struggled to locate the strike zone, issuing a four-pitch walk to Herrera. Franco couldn’t capitalize as he popped up to second base for the third out.

Hector Neris replaced Harang in the sixth and walked Rollins with two outs. Kendrick then hit a single up the middle and Gonzalez drew a walk to load the bases. Ethier went down swinging and the Dodgers failed to add to their 4-1 lead.

Puig and Callaspo singled in the seventh and Carl Crawford later drew a walk to load the bases. Neris threw a wild pitch that Ruiz quickly recovered, which resulted in Puig being tagged out in a rundown to end the inning. Pedro Baez came on in the bottom of the seventh and set the Phillies down in order, picking up two strikeouts in the process.

Jim Johnson allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, then a one-out, two-run home run to Francoeur that cut the Dodgers’ lead to 4-3. Kenley Jansen came on in the ninth and struck out the side to convert his 20th save of the season.

  1. Matthew did you listen to Steve Garvey and J Hare talk about Puig’s at bat on the post game show. Fascinating. They were not impressed. They broke down his swing and talked about why he is having problems and what he needs to do to fix it. Same with Pederson these guys have so much knowledge you wonder why the young hitters today do not take their advice.
Garvey in the Pre-Game talked about how to move in the box as a batter and change your stance and position anticipating what pitch you will see. He also talked about manufacturing runs by hitting the ball the other way and being smart. Things this club does not do well. He talked about how this club hits HR’s but still cannot manufacture runs.
I am afraid that will cost us in the Post season when runs are at a premium and pitchers are at the elite level.
Our defense will help us though.
    But our BP Yikes…

    1. No, I didn’t catch that. Yasiel Puig has changed his stance in recent games (dating back to the series against the Angels to the best of my memory).
