Justin Wilson Opts Out of Dodgers Contract

The Dodgers’ bullpen picture is a little clearer today than Monday.

Veteran left-hander Justin Wilson has opted out of his contract with the Dodgers and will be a free agent. The opt-out was first reported by Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors:

Wilson, 36, appeared in four Cactus League games for the Dodgers. He allowed five hits, two runs, two walks and struck out nine batters across four innings.

The Dodgers signed Wilson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training on Feb 16. He joined a bullpen that was relatively thin on left-handed pitching after the offseason trades of Victor Gonzalez and Caleb Ferguson.

However, with the increasing likelihood of left-hander Ryan Yarbrough beginning the season in the bullpen, joining holdover Alex Vesia, the possibility dimmed of any non-roster invitee cracking the Dodgers’ season-opening bullpen.

The timing of the move makes some sense. After Wednesday’s Cactus League finale, the Dodgers will fly to Seoul, South Korea to play two exhibition games prior to their March 20 season opener against the San Diego Padres. Wilson would likely rather remain behind to pursue a playing opportunity in Arizona or Florida than fly halfway around the globe before being cut.
