NL Rival Says What Dodgers Are Doing is ‘Great for the Game’

It’s the current great debate in Major League Baseball: Are the Los Angeles Dodgers ruining the game?

The question has been a major talking point heading into the 2024 MLB regular season. The Dodgers spent a ton of money this offseason to acquire players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow, assembling what some could consider on paper to be a “superteam.” Over the past few years, the Dodgers have brought in some of the best players, committing more than a billion dollars to acquire free agents like Ohtani, Yamamoto, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernández and others.

This has caused a variety of stakeholders to wonder if the Dodgers’ way of building a team is good or bad for the sport.

Count Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks firmly in favor of what the Dodgers have done, calling their spending spree “great for the game.”

“It’s going to be a show all year. It’s just a super-exciting team, man, seeing all of those players over there … Just as a baseball fan, it’s super-cool to see how good they are. It’s going to be interesting to see how they go about their business, to see how they perform for a full 162-game season. It’s something we all love to see.”

The Dodgers’ ability to assemble a talented roster poses a threat to the Cubs as National League rivals, but Hendricks seems to respect what they’ve done. Ultimately, the Dodgers’ on-field performance throughout the year and during the postseason will determine if their front office made the wisest investments.

  1. The only person they may have over paid for is Yamamoto. But they paid the MARKET price. He had other options, the Yankees, the Mets, maybe even the Phillies. $325 million was a lot for an unproven pitcher in the MLB. But people were willing to pay it. Fortunately, Ohtani made it all possible by deferring so much of his salary because he wanted the Dodgers to be competitive, So the front office rolled the dice. the only people not happy are those whose owners don’t want to pay to be competitive, Everybody shouldn’t have to pay over a billion to be competitive, but with Ohtani doing what he could, the Dodgers did what they could. Ohtani is only getting paid $2, million this year and next. Hopefully if the averages measure up, The Dodgers can win a few World Series’ and I don’t think Dodger fans will mind that at all.
