Breakout Candidates for the Second Half

Hector Olivera: After officially signing a hefty six-year, $62.5 million deal with the Dodgers earlier this spring, Olivera will soon be ready to add another layer of intrigue to the infield logjam.

Coming out of Cuba as one the best offensive players in recent memory, Olivera has already posted eye-catching numbers with three different Minor League affiliates stateside. In 74 plate appearances between rookie Arizona League, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, he is batting .348/.392/.493 with two home runs, one triple and two doubles.

Assuming Olivera is called up in the not-too-distant future, it will be interesting to see how much playing time he gets with Howie Kendrick and Justin Turner manning the positions he is accustomed to playing.

Brandon Beachy: Before undergoing a second Tommy John surgery with the Atlanta Braves in 2014, Beachy posted a 3.23 ERA and 3.34 FIP in 267.2 innings pitched from 2010-2013. Those numbers are good, which made it as no surprise the Dodgers wanted to take a flier on him and hope he’d contribute in the second half of the season.

In Beachy’s first start this season (July 11), he managed just four innings pitched while surrendering three earned runs and and eight baserunners against the Milwaukee Brewers. While he wasn’t at his best, there is the hope that he will get better as the season continues and the rust wears off.

If he comes even close to resembling his numbers with the Braves, he will be a much-needed boost in a depleted rotation.

It was a very entertaining first half of baseball filled with ups and downs and the second half of the season looks to be just as promising, hectic and unpredictable.
