Josh Beckett and Adam Wainwright took the mound Thursday in what was the first meeting between the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals since the 2013 NLCS.
As expected, Wainwright gave the Dodgers lineup fits throughout the game and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Miguel Rojas hit a leadoff single and Wainwright allowed another single in the inning, but it didn’t equate to any runs for the Dodgers.
With two outs in the seventh and the game locked in a scoreless tie, Allen Craig doubled off the right field wall. Jon Jay followed with a single into left field that Matt Kemp charged and threw a strike to home plate to nail Allen trying to score.
The play was reviewed and upheld as Dodger Stadium erupted. The Dodgers wouldn’t score until the eighth inning on a Justin Turner pinch-hit single, but Kemp’s play wound up proving to be the difference in a 1-0 win.
