With there being no shortage in the current pool of talented Cuban prospects, one name continues to stand out more so than the others. At just 19 years old, Yoan Moncada is highly sought after and is hoping to sign with a team by the end of the month.
Due to his age and not having at least five years of experience in a Cuban professional league, a team that signs Moncada would be subject to a 100 percent penalty tax. With the expectation that Moncada will sign anywhere from $40-50 million, the total cost for the Los Angeles Dodgers would be $80-$100 million.
While teams certainly are interested in Moncada, the substantial financial commitment for such a young player may be playing a role in him not yet receiving any formal offers. Moncada completed two private workouts for the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the most recent coming in front of team executives in Florida.
Prior to going on his workout tour for teams in preparation for the 2015 season, Moncada was on the Cuba roster for the 18U World Championship in Taiwan in September 2013. Over eight games, he hit .375/.483/.542 in 29 plate appearances, including this 3-for-4 effort against pitchers from the United States roster who were taken in the 2014 draft:
