With Opening Day for the Los Angeles Dodgers just under three weeks away, manager Don Mattingly made the first group of cuts on Tuesday. The majority of the cuts were as expected and there were 10 total players who were reassigned/optioned to the minor leagues.
Most notably is Stephen Fife, who at one point was believed to be factor in the search for a fifth starter. Fife pitched in 12 games last season, starting 10 and posting a 4-4 record. The right-hander threw two innings in one appearance this spring.
Though not as much of a surprise was outfielder Nick Buss, who spent time with the Dodgers in September of last season, was also optioned. Buss was a likely candidate to start the season in the minors anyhow, where he will have the opportunity to continue developing. The former Trojan could again receive consideration for a call-up if Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp are unable to shake free of injuries.
Full list of players cut from camp on Tuesday: Pedro Baez, Buss, Sam Demel, Griff Erickson, Fife, Yimi Garcia, Jarrett Martin, Daniel Moskos, Chris O’Brien and Chris Reed.
