Although Clayton Kershaw is expected to start on Tuesday, Hyun-Jin Ryu will assume Kershaw’s spot on the disabled list, which leaves the Los Angeles Dodgers down a starter once again. With the number of injuries more abundant than usual, the team has been active in making minor changes to their roster. During the Dodgers doubleheader this week, the organization called up Red Patterson from Triple-A to make the game two start. They look to Albuquerque once again as they head into Sunday’s game against the Miami Marlins.

According the Dodgers official Twitter account, Don Mattingly stated that Stephen Fife will be recalled for the series finale against the Marlins, and Jose Dominguez will be optioned back to Albuquerque:

Fife, whose name was lightly considered in debates as to who the fifth starter would be, has spent the entire 2014 season in Triple-A with starters Josh Beckett and Paul Maholm solidifying their spots over the 27-year-old right-hander. In four starts with the Isotopes this year, Fife is 1-2 with an inflated 7.08 ERA.

The organization’s decision to select Fife as Sunday’s starter most likely stems from his major league experience during the 2013 season. With a 3.86 ERA in 10 starts with the Dodgers last year, Fife has proven that he is capable of a making a spot start. Despite the positive numbers from the previous season, Fife saw only one game during this year’s Spring Training and allowed one run in just two innings pitched.

Dominguez has been shuffled in and out of the minors quite a few times this season. The right-handed reliever is expendable due in part to the righty-dominant bullpen, but also because of his unimpressive outings. In five games with the Dodgers so far this year, Dominguez has accumulated an 11.37 ERA in just 6.1 innings pitched. When the handful of injured starters work their way back to the active roster, how the organization chooses to manage their currently shaky bullpen will be something to keep an eye on.
