2019 Dodgers Trade Deadline: A Day-of Journal As Moves Happen
Last season I did a Trade Dealine journal but it wasn’t published the next day. This year, it will be published and updated throughout the day. The latest will be on top.
Summary
Yes, the summary is at the top since we are going in reverse order. The Dodgers got a left-handed reliever in Adam Kolarek and Jedd Gyorko while giving up Niko Hulsizer, Tony Cingrani and Jeffry Abreu. it is not an overwhelmng day at all for the Dodgers as the Astros, Braves and Nationals got better. However, the Dodgers have Gavin Lux, Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May that could contribute. The Dodgers are a very good team and could still improve with the prospects that could be ready. They are clearly not afraid to put them into action as we see with Will Smith replacing Austin Barnes.
July 31 PM

- 12:37 Joe Davis is brilliant
Joe Davis actually suggested that they should put the Twitter-feed on refresh on the scoreboard so the fans could just watch the trade deadline.
We don’t hate this idea.

- 12:29 The Braves traded for Catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Diamondbacks for $.
- 12:27 Adios Rocky Gale
#Rays acquiring Rocky Gale from #Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations, sources tell The Athletic.
— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) July 31, 2019
- 12:23 Braves are getting Shane Greene per multiple reports.
- 12:19 More on Gyorko
Jedd Gyorko, new Dodger, is not eligible to be activated from the injured list for another week, and it’s not clear if he’ll be ready then. He plays second and third and hits for power. This smells like a typical August trade for depth.
— Pedro Moura (@pedromoura) July 31, 2019
- 12:13 Rosenthal reporting Dodgers getting Jedd Gyorko. Weird
- 12:09 Looks like a key Dodger target is off the board:
#Braves close to acquiring Shane Greene from the #Tigers, source tells The Athletic.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2019
- 12:00 A Felipe Vazquez rumor
With the deadline an hour away, the #Pirates have not moved off their ask of Gavin Lux OR Dustin May plus Keibert Ruiz from the #Dodgers for Felipe Vázquez, source tells The Athletic. #Dodgers currently focused on lesser relievers. Situation remains fluid, subject to change.

- 11:58 Some Dodger Deadline history:
I am fairly certain my brother is still broken hearted over this trade.
Lo Duca was his favorite player because he was also a catcher. https://t.co/4PpEvIhTfD
— Dodgers Nation (@DodgersNation) July 31, 2019
- 11:50 Jeff Passan is reporting the Phillies acquired Corey Dickerson from the Pirates. Also a prospect trade:
Right-hander Zac Gallen is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Miami Marlins for shortstop prospect Jazz Chisholm, source tells ESPN. Gallen has been very good, with a 2.72 ERA in seven major league starts.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 31, 2019
- 11:36 The Nationals have acquired Hudson, Strickland and Elias for their bullpen. Make your own judgements, I guess.
The Nationals entire 25 man roster is now relief pitchers.
— Ned2point0 (PARODY?) (@Ned2point0) July 31, 2019
- 11:33 Nationals get Hunter Strickland from the Mariners via Mark Feinsand
- 11:30 Let’s keep some receipts:
I'm told #Dodgers prospect Gavin Lux is virtually untouchable, even in the Felipe Vázquez talks. @MLB @MLBNetwork
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) July 31, 2019
Team officials say that trade talks between the #Yankees and #Dbacks for starter Robbie Ray are now dead.
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) July 31, 2019
- 11:27 A’ get Tanner Roark from Reds
- 11:25 Brewers get Drew Pomeranz from Giants for their 3rd best prospect? Pomeranz has been good in the bullpen. Brewers also get Ray Black.
- 11:11 It looks like the Nationals are also getting left hander Roenis Elias from the Mariners per Ken Rosenthal. Along with Hudson he may have been a Dodger target. Neither really moves the needle though.
- 11:05 Catching up – Nationals get Daniel Hudson, Rays get Jesus Aguilar and the Astros and Cubs swap Tony Kemp for Martin Maldonado.
- 10:30 Lineup has Joc Pederson in it for those on #HugWatch
Today's Dodger lineup at Rockies:
Pederson LF
Muncy 3B
Beaty 1B
Bellinger RF
Seager SS
Smith C
Verdugo CF
Negrón 2B

- 9:01 White Sox trade injured Nate Jones to the Rangers for international money
- 8:20 Gonsolin could be an excellent bullpen piece with his 96 MPH fastball and 89 MPH splitter
Trade talk will dominate this morning, but don't forget that last night, the Dodgers featured Tony Gonsolin and his 96 mph fastball and 89 mph splitter. Might he be an important late-season addition?

- 8:00 What if the Dodgers don’t make a big trade?
Without being too negative, how would you feel if the Dodgers didn’t pull off any major deals by the trade deadline? pic.twitter.com/K7RjJUhYHE
— Dodgers Nation (@DodgersNation) July 31, 2019
- 6:41 Nothing but speculation like “player A could be available but could stay”. Any trade predictions? Please feel free to comment. I think the Dodgers get two good relievers.
July 30 PM
- 9:00 Right after the Dodgers win there was an update on Russell Martin
Russell Martin tweaked his back on a swing in the third inning but wanted to stay in.
— Ken Gurnick (@kengurnick) July 31, 2019
Just something to keep an eye on as Austin Barnes was 0-5 in OKC at the same time.
- 7:15 I was at work when this came across the headlines
So, #Indians’ return, per @dennistlin and @JonHeyman, will be Yasiel Puig, Franmil Reyes and Logan Allen. Bauer to CIN, Taylor Trammell to SD.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2019
Gotta love a blockbuster on the eve of the Trade Deadline.
- 6:00 The Braves trade for Dodgers trade target Chris Martin. They gave up their #10 prospect, Kolby Allard. The Dodgers’ #10 prospect is Mitchell White for comparison’s sake.
You know whose bullpen Tony Gonsolin could help? Our own!
After last night, I think we should have a solid, upper echelon return for Ruiz or Gonsolin. Lux and May out of the question. Gonsolin was lights out in Coors Field! He could be our 7th, 8th inning option. Like you say, Bruce, he COULD be an answer for us.
Jedd Gyorko? We’re gonna win a World Series on the back of (cough) Jedd Gyorko???
Holy cow.
