Dodgers: Mookie Betts Goes Off in Win Over the Padres

The Dodgers and Padres played their first game of the season on Friday night. And as you can expect for a game between the two NL West teams, fans packed out Petco Park in a very big way. And Los Angeles fans were not disappointed in their team.

Initially, the Padres came out with an early lead. They got to Julio Urias in the 2nd inning but would not do any further damage for the rest of the game. Urias went 5 strong for the Dodgers, striking out 6 and issuing 3 walks en route to his first win of the 2022 season.

With the bats, the Dodgers took a little bit to get going. Mookie Betts launched a ball DEEP into left in the top of the 5th inning to tie things up. A few batters later, Max Muncy snuck one over the wall in right to give them the lead, and they never lost it after that.

Mookie would later add another homer in the top of the 9th for his second of the game. Given how poor of a start he has gotten off to this season, that’s huge for the Dodgers leadoff guy. He finished the night with a pair of walks and a pair of runs driven in on his solo shots.

In the bullpen, the Dodgers went with 5 different guys behind Julio to get the job done. Daniel Hudson pitched a perfect frame to start things off, as did Evan Phillips, who punched out two batters. Phil Bickford, Alex Vesia, and David Price would wrap up the game with ease behind them.

Up next, the Dodgers and Padres will go head-to-head once again on Saturday evening. Yu Darvish will go for the Padres, facing off against Tyler Anderson. This was supposed to be Andrew Heaney’s spot in the rotation, but he went down earlier this week with a shoulder issue.
