Dodgers: Mookie Betts Talks About the Other NL West Team He Was Almost Traded To

Dodgers fans could not be happier with the way they got Mookie Betts on their team this year. Aside from losing a few young prospects, the Betts trade has only really gone in their favor. And since he was traded, Mookie signed a massive 12-year extension that will keep him in Los Angeles for life.

But if you can think all the way back to the beginning of the year, Mookie almost wasn’t a member of the Dodgers. In fact, there was a chance that he was going to the division-rival Padres. Betts talked about the trade that almost was in a podcast hosted by CC Sabathia

It went down to San Diego and here(Dodgers)…It was just these two teams. It was a cool process actually, it seemed like everybody was on the same page. The Red Sox front office did a great  job of talking through everything. It wasn’t just like boom trade on Twitter. They talked and were like hey if something makes sense then we’re going to go ahead and pull the trigger.

First of all, it would be a real bummer if Mookie wasn’t a part of the Dodgers. But it would be so much worse if the Padres had landed him in a deal this year. The Padres could have very well knocked Los Angeles out of the top of the NL West if not for that trade.

The good news is that Mookie IS here with the Dodgers, and seems happier than ever to be playing baseball. We’ll just try not to think about the scary lineup that could have been down in San Diego.

  1. Sure, without Mookie the Dodgers are still a good team, but with Mookie the Padres would have easily taken the division. No way the Dodgers would have come out on top with Bellinger, Muncy, Pederson and Lux under performing like they did. The only silver lining would have been that San Diego would not likely have been able to offer him the contract the Dodgers did.

  2. Thank you Mooky. But nothing against him, the Dodgers almost always seem to find a good fit when needing a player, though I do have my complaints of some of those that don’t perform as well as expected.

  3. Mookie all Dodger Fans know that you made the RIGHT choice by signing a 12 year contract commitment to the Dodger Organization and WE could not be HAPPIER!!!! You look GREAT wearing Dodger Blue and So glad that you are not wearing a GROSS padres uniform…..there is no accounting for another teams choice of what they call a baseball uniform!! This is your home now Mookie!!!! Lets GO WIN us a World Series Title and bring HOME that stunning World Series Trophy to Dodger Stadium!!

  4. How was SD going to afford Mookie and Machado? Spending like the Yanks now? How was that supposed to happen in San Diego? Might have crumbled the franchise rather than elevated it.

  5. When the trade was first made I hated it. Sure, Mookie is a great player, but we were likely just to have him for one season, same as Machado and Darvish. Plus, Verdugo was one of my favorites. He looked like a future star. When Mookie signed the big contract things were different. Verdugo has been Boston’s MVP, but we still have Mookie!

  6. Yep Verdugo has been really good for Boston. But this time, we made a trade that puts us on top. Mookie has been HOF caliber for this season. And who knows how many OTHER seasons like this will we now have? My guess is we are going to have several seasons like this from Mookie. 3 or so WAR seasons close to 10 and a bunch 5-7 (still AllStar). Great trade and signing.
