Dodgers Still Undecided on How to Proceed With Brusdar Graterol

The Dodgers were hoping to have Brusdar Graterol back for the upcoming road trip in Atlanta. That’s what Dave Roberts had said this weekend after it was announced he would be throwing with Oklahoma City. But now, it sounds like there is a chance that won’t happen.

Graterol made an appearance in last night’s game with the OKC Dodgers. He tossed one inning and induced 3 outs via groundballs and a flyout. Graterol did that all on 11 pitches and reportedly sat up near triple-digits with his heater.

But that apparently was not enough to make an immediate decision on when he will be activated. The Dodgers manager spoke with media on Tuesday about Brusdar and the uncertainly about what he will do this week.

I think some of it is contingent on the buildup, some of it is contingent on the performance, some of it is contingent on need here. So we really could go a couple of different directions. And right now I just think it’s kind of keep him on the rehab for however long that is, and then we’ll make a decision at a later date.

It sounds like his return depends on a lot of different factors right now. But it might play in his favor that the Dodgers are throwing a bullpen game tonight just a few days before heading out on a road trip.

Regardless of what the need might be, it sounds like he is ready to be back up. The Dodgers will probably want to see him throw more than 11 pitches before activating him, so that might be part of the problem with his outing on Monday.

  1. Gonsolin’s return as the 5th starter will take the pressure off of the bullpen.
After that they will have the leisure to give Graterol more time. Jimmy Nelson is due back soon reportedly also.
Jones has been effective as has Bickford after a horrible debut

  2. Graterol seems to have issues other than the fact hitters don’t swing and miss at his 101 mph heat

    1. He induces a high % of ground balls though. Perhaps they can get Colon or one of the pitchers that learned to hide the ball before delivery that makes a pitch faster due to reaction time.

  3. dumberts is a liar and he is breaking the team down mark this down dodgers will not make the playoffs and they have the best team and the worst manager

  4. When Graterol returns he replaces another pitcher who gets sent down. So why not wait one day,let the other pitcher (Vesia/Uceta?) pitch then send him down and have Graterol as a fresh arm?

  5. He has to learn to throw strikes. Most players can hit a 100 mph fastball. He definitely needs another pitch or two to keep batters honest.

  6. Not bringing Graterol back yet makes sense given he’s only pitched in one game and it was an 11 pitch outing. We’ll probably see him after his next game…on the next road trip.

More concerning is we only have five starters including Gonsolin. When he’s back we will have no starters in the minors or rehabbing to call on until Gray gets healthy and that’s not going to happen soon. So, it’s likely a trade situation with some tanking team or a 3 way-er. Incredibly we lack depth at SP and we have a somewhat injury prone cadre of starters.
