Dodgers: Trea Turner Tried to Recruit Carlos Rodon to Los Angeles

The Dodgers and Giants rivalry carries a little extra meaning this year. After San Francisco dethroned Los Angeles from their run of National League West titles, they’re very much looking to get back. Dave Roberts himself said that he took it personally that they took them out in 2021.

But there is also the added layer of a friendship this year. Trea Turner and Carlos Rodon were roommates while they played at North Carolina State before making it to the big leagues. Now that Turner is with the Dodgers and Rodon with the Giants, they’ll get to see each other a lot.

But as The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya notes, there was a chance they were going to be teammates. Turner reportedly tried to get Rodon to come and play for the Dodgers before he eventually went on to sign with the Giants.

“Turner’s wife Kristen and Rodón’s wife Ashley remain close. And the former roommates attended a wedding together this winter as Rodón hit free agency. Turner tried selling him on the fit with a franchise that would go on to add not one, but two perennial All-Stars in Freddie Freeman and Craig Kimbrel after Rodón signed elsewhere.”

Rodon would go on to signal  deal with San Francisco for 2 years and $44 million. Meanwhile, Turner is playing in his last year before free agency, and there seems to be no extension in sight from the Dodgers. So this very well could be the one and only year that the two former teammates get to participate in the rivalry together.

But Turner got things started off in the best way. He scorched a double off of Rodon down the line in one of his at-bats on Tuesday night. Expect these Dodgers and Giants to go head-to-head all year long, and its going to be one heck of a race.
